Lo primero que note fue la visibilidad del trabajo. Por donde quiera veía los trabajos de la ciudad desde la calle. Puertas y ventanas revelaban a la gente haciendo, haciendo de todo, desde comida hasta zapatos, desde jugo de naranja hasta instrumentos musicales.

Pregunté si me podía sentar y dibujar a la gente mientras trabajaba. Fascinado por sus manos, buscaba cómo se entrena la gente para ejecutar ciertas tareas. Las manos junto con el resto del cuerpo toman eventualmente su forma de una constante repetición de tareas. Ellas obtienen una gran inteligencia física, una habilidad natural y fuerza. Nos volcamos en las cosas que hacemos y a su vez ellas dejan una marca en nosotros.

Entreno mis propias manos para dibujar, repito dibujos una y otra vez, quiero que mi mano encuentre un ritmo o un fluir que por turno encuentre la manera correcta sin pensamiento consciente.

Mientras me sentaba con la gente, dibujando sus manos, una y otra vez, se creaba un espacio entre nosotros que invitaba a las conversaciones. Hablábamos del trabajo de cada quien, sus procesos, escuchaba historias de cómo cada persona se convertía en lo que era, sus influencias y su compromiso con su tarea.

Todo esto configura mi entendimiento del trabajo. Esto se convirtió en algo más valioso que el conjunto de dibujos que me iban quedando. Siempre estoy buscando una influencia, una interrupción que pueda lanzar mi trabajo en una dirección inesperada. En estas situaciones ha sido a través del estudio de las acciones de las personas pero también a través de lo que dicen, su actitud e ideas.
Todo el trabajo en esta exposición ha sido desarrollado sentándose con la gente en la ciudad de Querétaro.

A city of flakes and planes.

El piso siempre es un buen lugar para buscar inspiración. Todo termina ahí eventualmente. Rápidamente me constreñí al motivo repetido del avión de papel, titilando entre otros objetos desechados en la calle. Hay algo bello acerca de este pequeño gesto de creatividad, y su abundancia, tantas personas entendiendo la misma oportunidad con un volante, un recibo, su tarea, la receta de un doctor. La imaginación, casi inconscientemente, es tan fácilmente alcanzada en este momento singular y familiar.

Joy of juice.

Cuando visite China, me quedé en un pueblo en el que cada superficie plana estaba cubierta de chiles, secándose al sol. Una terraza fieramente caliente afuera de mi estudio me inspiró a recrear esta memoria.
|
Así que he guardado y secado cada naranja que usé como un creciente registro de mi propia labor. Y cuando llegué al museo en septiembre, hice jugo de naranja para todos en el edificio como una manera de presentarme. Cada mitad de naranja lleva una huella física diferente de mi mano, y muestra colectivamente el acto de la repetición, la rutina, el ritual.

New light.

El mágico espectáculo de la camera obscura es algo que me fascina, u específicamente aquí en México. He notado por todas partes la necesidad constante de crear sombra, para bloquear la fuerza del sol. Y al crear sombra, creas espacio. Trabajé con los estudiantes para crear un espacio de completa oscuridad, que se convirtió en una camera obscura, que te invitaría a ver el mundo bajo una nueva luz.
